Her Notes

Choreography by Jessica Lang  |  Music by Fanny Mendelssohn

A self-proclaimed "visual artist whose medium is dance," choreographer Jessica Lang incorporates striking design elements and transforms classical ballet language to conceive a complete universe, both artfully crafted and emotionally engaging. Lang finds an intriguing inspiration for her "visual music" in a piano suite by Fanny Mendelssohn, the sister of composer Felix Mendelssohn, for her ABT commission. Her Notes received its World Premiere by American Ballet Theatre on Friday, October 21, 2016 at the David H. Koch Theater, New York

Symphonic Variations

Choreography by Frederick Ashton  |  Music by César Franck

Acclaimed as one of Ashton’s finest works, Symphonic Variations is a radiant classical showpiece for its six dancers, full of flowing lines and gleaming footwork. It is one of the great challenges of the ballet repertory, needing soft grace in demanding steps, as dancers coalesce in quartets, duets, sextets and solos but always with a sense of serenity, grandeur and spirituality, perfectly reflecting Franck's masterful score for piano and orchestra

Other Dances

Choreography by Jerome Robbins  |  Music by Frédéric Chopin

Set to a waltz and four mazurkas by Frédéric Chopin, the plotless classical character pas de deux was created by Robbins for a Gala evening for the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Centcer at the Metropolitan Opera House on May 9, 1976. First performed by Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov, it was staged for American Ballet Theatre by Isabel Guerin. Other Dances will receive five performances during the season.

Thirteen Diversions

Choreography by Christopher Wheeldon  |  Music by Benjamin Britten

Geometries shift in refreshing ways to create Christopher Wheeldon's choreographic kaleidoscope of surprising images and spectacular contrasts. With four principal couples and 16 corps de ballet members, this is ballet on a grand scale. Christopher Wheeldon's Thirteen Diversions gives the audience something spectacular. Its structure is hierarchical, its changes of mood are sharp, its pas de deux are stellar, its corps ensembles are spatially impressive and everything is chic.
